Intervista a Robyn Spargo (Allev. Pureheel, AUS)

English Version

Dear Robyn, thanks for accepting this interview! First of all, how did you get involved with the breed and why did you decide to bred ACDs?
Back in 1982 we were into horses and had a pet Cattledog. Our neighbour showed and bred Pyrenees, she suggested we get a pure bred ACD and try showing, so we got one. That first one wasn't a winner so we decided to breed her and, “the rest is history”

What are, in your opinion, the most important features of the “ideal” ACD?
Type is very important, especially head type. We have a style of head we like and try to reproduce, that's not always easy. Temperament is very important too

When it comes to breeding, how do you choose the best combination? How do you choose your keepers as puppies?
When we choose a stud dog for our bitches we look for a dog that has the best features to compliment our bitch. For example, if our bitch is lacking in hind angulation we want a male with correct hind angles, but also a good overall male

When choosing a keeper from the litter we look for the most balanced pup, with a good head and hopefully it has that “look at me” attitude

What do you think is more important for new owners/newbies to know about the breed?
I don't think cattledogs are an easy breed to live with, they can be destructive and headstrong. New owners need to know this and be prepared to put a lot of time and work into their pup, then they'll end up with a lifelong friend

ACD is a herding dog, please give us your vision and opinion about ACDs at work
When Cattle Dogs were developed in Australia they worked more with rough cattle, in really remote places, they really had to be tough. Nowadays the stock are a lot tamer and I think the breed has had to adapt to that

Your dogs are being very succesful in the conformation ring, is there an achievement that has remain in your heart more than others? And why?
I remember our first Best in Show at our Victorian Club breed specialty in 1994, CH Pureheel Royal Tyson won with an entry of 92 dogs

Although I think the most memorable win will always be Sup CH Pureheel Royal Indulgence ET winning Best in Show at the New South Wales specialty in 2014. She had won Runner Up in Show up there a couple of times and finally getting the Best in Show was a dream

She was my heart dog too
